An Amy Winehouse biopic is coming our way!
Winehouse’s family has signed off on a new deal to have a biopic made about the late singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. The news was announced on Monday, Oct. 15; Monumental Pictures’ Alison Owen – mother to Lily and Alfie Allen – and Debra Hayward will produce the film. The Winehouse family will serve as executive producers and the story will be written by Kinky Boots and Geoff Deane.
The biopic may seem long overdue but the Winehouse family said, “the time was not.” “We now feel able to celebrate Amy’s extraordinary life and talent,” Winehouse’s father Mitch said in a statement. “And we know through the Amy Winehouse Foundation that the true story of her illness can help so many others who might be experiencing similar issues.”
Owen and Hayward are more than excited to tackle another strong female, as the two are well-known for their work with fictional and non-fictional female stories. “We’re proud that Mitch Winehouse has entrusted us with the story of amazing Amy, an icon whose songs have provided the soundtrack to a generation,” they said in a statement.
Some speculated that #LadyGaga would be playing Winehouse but Mitch put those rumors to an end. “I wouldn’t mind betting it would be an unknown, young, English – London, cockney – actress who looks a bit like Amy,” he said. Mitch says they want someone who can bring her real-life characteristics to life. “What we want is somebody to portray Amy in the way that she was … the funny, brilliant, charming and horrible person that she was. There’s no point really me making the film because I’m her dad. But to get the right people to do it, that’s very important and we will.”
The biopic is set to start production in 2019 and all proceeds from the film will go towards the Amy Winehouse Foundation.
