Colleges and Universities across the country are preparing to start classes, but many schools that were allowing students back on campus are finding themselves sending kids home for irresponsible behavior. The most recent being, Syracuse University in New York.

On Wednesday night, first-year Syracuse University students held a large gathering on the Quad. The event, which is being labeled as “incredibly reckless behavior,” has left 23 students suspended.

“We have one shot to make this happen,” Vice Chancellor J. Michael Haynie wrote in a letter to students. “The world is watching, and they expect you to fail. Prove them wrong.”

To identify any additional students, Syracuse is reviewing security footage, interviewing witnesses, and “processing a number of tips.”

While classes are scheduled to begin Monday, Haynie commented that this “may have done damage enough to shut down the campus, including residence halls and in-person learning” before then.

Currently, there are only seven active COVID-19 cases on campus. If this number surges, the school will be forced to close its doors for the fall semester, joining many other universities across the country.
