Andrew Cuomo‘s alleged inappropriate behavior and sexual misconduct have left State Senate majority leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins with no choice but to ask him to resign from office.
According to CNN, Stewart-Cousins made the announcement to Cuomo early Sunday before a press call.
Stewart-Cousins argues that for the betterment of New York state, Cuomo should immediately relieve himself of his duties.
“We have more allegations about sexual harassment, a toxic work environment, the loss of credibility surrounding the Covid nursing home data, and questions surrounding the construction of a major infrastructure project,” Stewart-Cousins shared.
“New York is still in the midst of this pandemic and is still facing the societal, health, and economic impacts of it,” Stewart-Cousins stated. “We need to govern without daily distraction. For the good of the state, Governor Cuomo must resign.”
Stewart-Cousins is not alone in her call for resignation. Many Democratic lawmakers believe a change in governance is long overdue — Cuomo has served three terms.
New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie shared that he, too, believes Cuomo has lost the ability to lead the state properly.
“The allegations pertaining to the Governor that have been reported in recent weeks have been deeply disturbing and have no place whatsoever in government, the workplace, or anywhere,” Heastie said. “We have many challenges to address, and I think it is time for the Governor to seriously consider whether he can effectively meet the needs of the people of New York.”
Cuomo, however, shared in a press call on Sunday that he has no plans on resigning.
“There are some legislators who suggest that I resign because of accusations that made — are made against me. The people of the state elected me. I wasn’t elected by politicians. I’m not going to resign because of allegations.”
