Businessman and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang have reportedly filed paperwork to run for mayor of New York City.
According to NBC News, the city’s Campaign Finance Board confirmed the filing on Wednesday. Yang’s entrance into the mayoral race has the potential to upend the previous prediction for what the 2021 election become.
The entrepreneur impressed many voters after the Democratic primary with his call for a universal basic income of $1000 a month for every American over 18, but his popularity didn’t translate into the ultimate support needed to maintain his 2020 campaign.
Yang has already been receiving support for a mayoral run as polls in New York show him with a lead over Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
New York City’s primary election will be held on June 22, 2021. As of this past Tuesday, there were at least 35 people had filed paperwork with the finance board to run for mayor.
