Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have been on the opposing side of historical moments this year, culturally changing women’s basketball forever. The amount of social media impressions, viewership, and NIL deals with their influence is glaring.
The two ladies made history once again when they were named Co Sporting News Athletes of the Year. The first time in history in over 20 years when Marshall Faulk and Kurt Warner, teammates shared the award in 2001. This adds to the list of ties these women have continued to garner.
The two ladies faced off in one of the most viewed college basketball women’s tournament championship games in history, where the Lady Tiger of LSU, led by Angel Reese, defeated Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes 102-85.
Clark led all scorers with 30 points on 9-for-22 shooting. While Reese led the game in rebounds, with ten, while adding 15 points to the Championship win. The competitive Reese let the sharpshooter hear about it as the game final seconds neared.
A resounding amount of media attention has surrounded these ladies since that game. From some questioning Reese’s mentality and sympathizing with Clark. A prototypical debate argument that can be argued through race, size, and other factors.
From music videos, commercials, and NIL deals sports experts wondering if these two ladies will carry the mantle into the next generation of WNBA superstars. For now, we will see if these ladies can lead their teams to a successful season and possibly have a historical rematch in the national championship this upcoming season.
Congrats to both ladies on this accomplishment and I’m sure this will not be the last award either lady receives.
