Chicago Sky player Angel Reese may have just snagged the Daughter of the Year award.
On the most recent episode of her podcast, Reese pulled off a memorable and emotional surprise for her mother on her birthday. The episode, which was recorded on the same day as her mother’s birthday, kicked off with a heartfelt conversation between the two ladies.

While the conversation was warming, Reese had something special up her sleeve. Before her mother could finish enjoying a small birthday cake, Reese revealed that she had paid off her mother’s mortgage, which allowed her to retire.
“For your birthday today, you said that if your mortgage was paid off, you would retire,” Reese said. “So your mortgage today has been paid. You don’t have to worry about your mortgage no more, and if you want to work and still keep yourself busy, you can keep yourself busy.”
Of course, Reese’s mom was obviously so overwhelmed with joy that she nearly dropped the birthday cake. “Oh my goodness!” she gasped. “Are you serious?”
After reality sat in, Reese’s mom teared up and celebrated the moment with a hug from her superstar daughter, who finished the surprise by singing “Happy Birthday.”
Nonetheless, Reese’s big surprise is even more meaningful considering the financial realities of WNBA players. Unlike their NBA counterparts, the women don’t sign multimillion-dollar contracts. In fact, Reese’s four-year contract with the Chicago Sky is only worth $324,383. Still, she was able to gift her mother with an unforgettable present with the help of endorsement deals from brands like Reebok and most recently, McDonald’s.
“Looking at her and seeing how she never backed down to anything. She always stood her ground,” Reese said in an 2023 interview. “Being able to just look at her and say, ‘Mom, you showed me. You paved the way for me.'”
