Italian boxer Angela Carini has publicly apologized to Imane Khelif for her handling of their controversial match at the Olympics.
Carini expressed sadness over the situation, saying, “All this controversy makes me sad. I’m sorry for my opponent, too. If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision.” She admitted her anger after her Olympic dreams ended, explaining that she didn’t intend to snub Khelif and would even embrace her if they met again.
Rumors started swirling that Khelif might be transgender after Carini walked out of their match just 46 seconds in, following Khelif’s first significant punch.
Following the win, many accused Khelif of “gender cheating.”
The situation was further complicated by Khelif’s disqualification from the women’s World Championships last year for failing a gender eligibility test, as stated by the International Boxing Association.
It’s clear that the labels and accusations only made things worse.
In addition to Carini’s apology, others should also express regret for their role in spreading false rumors.
