Angela Simmons is opening up about her experience with an abusive relationship that left her scarred for years.
During a recent sit down with Taraji P. Henson for her Facebook Watch series, “Peace of Mind with Taraji,” Simmons detailed how a former relationship became abusive over time. The entrepreneur and reality TV star said she was unaware that her partner had a bad temper, which only became more volatile over time. He would get angry over minor issues, which would escalate to throwing items at her and slamming her against walls. Simmons even revealed that she had to jump out of a moving car to escape him at one point.
“I never thought in a million years I was going to be that person,” the 34-year-old stated. “When I was going through it, I was like, ‘this is insane.’ And at the same time, you’re not wanting to tell no one around you because you’re in a relationship with the person, and you don’t want them to judge them. In a weird way, you’re still guarding them but going through it yourself.”
While the “Growing Up Hip-Hop” star didn’t elaborate on who her abuser was, she has been linked to several high-profile men in the past. She shares a 5-year-old son with her late ex-fiancé, Sutton Tennyson.
Simmons said she didn’t immediately recognize the red flags because she was in love. It wasn’t until she was “knee-deep” into the relationship that she realized she was being abused. When the domestic violence was occurring, Simmons says she’d often blamed herself. When it finally ended, she “blocked out” some of the experience in order to cope.
“Eventually, there’s a mechanism where you just start blocking stuff out because you realize how much it affects you mentally. It shook me up. I felt horrible after it all.”
During the emotional conversation, Henson shared her own experiences with domestic violence, revealing that she is missing a part of her lip after being punched by an ex.
