Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics are really trying to promote social distancing between athletes amid a surge in COVID-19 cases. So much so that they have the athletes sleeping on cardboard “anti-sex” beds meant for one person.
The beds in the athletes’ village are reportedly designed to collapse under the weight of more than one person. So if the athletes are looking to get busy during the games, it will have to be somewhere else. 18,000 beds have been set up.
The beds were designed by Japanese company Airweave and are 100 percent recyclable.
“Beds to be installed in Tokyo Olympic Village will be made of cardboard, this is aimed at avoiding intimacy among athletes,” tweeted American distance runner Paul Chelimo.

“Beds will be able to withstand the weight of a single person to avoid situations beyond sports,” he joked. “I see no problem for distance runners, even 4 of us can do.”
Organizers are once again handing out condoms to athletes. However, while they simultaneously push social distancing and safe sex, they are handing out significantly less. This year, 160,000 condoms will be dispensed, compared to 450,000 handed out last summer.
Instead of practicing safe sex at the games, they hope the athletes take them back to their home countries and spread awareness.
So far, two athletes have already tested positive for coronavirus. Additionally, an individual involved in planning the event tested positive the day before.
