Once again, the NFL is not playing around when it comes to its players and drug use. Training camp has yet to start but already three major players are facing suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain, and Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson have all been suspended for the first four games of the season, as announced by the NFL today.
Gates tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, though the specific substance was not made clear. However, Gates maintains that while he did take some supplements in the offseason, he did not know they were considered a banned substance. He takes full responsibility for his actions and will be suspended without pay until October 5. This is Gates’ first drug-related suspension in his 12 years in the NFL.
McClain and Richardson both tested positive for marijuana, which is without a doubt the number one substance that gets NFL players in trouble. For both players, it was not their first time getting busted, which is why they are now facing a four game suspension without pay. When players violate the drug policy the first time, they are hit with a fine. If they violate it a second time, the punishment then escalates to a period of unpaid suspension. After the news broke, McClain and Richardson issued apologies to teammates and fans and have vowed that they won’t do it again.
All three players will be allowed to participate in training camp and preseason games. Their suspensions will begin Week 1 of the regular season.
