According to reports, Apple is altering the charging method for its upcoming iPhone models in the near future.
CNN Business reports that Apple plans to switch the upcoming iPhone 15 from the Lightning port used in earlier models to the USB-C standard. iPhones have been using the Lightning connector since 2012.
Apple is familiar with the USB-C port because they’ve already used it in products like MacBooks and iPads. The USB-C port is also a common feature in the technology offerings of various other manufacturers. Notably, in late 2022, the European Union’s parliament passed a law requiring the inclusion of a USB-C charging port in “all mobile phones, tablets, and cameras sold in the EU.” Companies are obligated to adhere to this regulation by the end of 2024.
As per the regulation, laptops within the EU will also fall under the USB-C requirement by 2026.
The news about Apple’s potential adoption of the USB-C format is surfacing in anticipation of the company’s upcoming “Wonderlust” event. It’s widely anticipated that the iPhone 15, which hasn’t been officially unveiled yet, may be introduced during this event.
