Apple has paid a woman millions in damages after technicians for the company used her iPhone to post explicit videos.
An Oregon woman received a multi-million dollar settlement after technicians she paid to fix her phone instead uploaded explicit photos and videos to the internet. According to The Guardian, the woman sent her phone in to be repaired on January 14, 2016, by an Apple-approved repair contractor called Pegatron Technology Service in California.
While they were handling the phone, the techs uploaded “extremely personal and private material” to the woman’s Facebook page and other places online. According to court documents, the content was uploaded to the internet to appear as if the woman uploaded them herself. The Guardian reports that the incident caused the woman to feel “severe emotional distress.” The woman only became aware after her friends told her about the photos and videos being on her page.
The news outlet reports the woman took Apple to court. However, the company’s name was not listed in the lawsuit to preserve confidentiality.
Apple addressed the incident on Monday. “We take the privacy and security of our customers’ data extremely seriously and have a number of protocols in place to ensure data is protected throughout the repair process,” an Apple spokesperson said.
“When we learned of this egregious violation of our policies at one of our vendors in 2016, we took immediate action and have since continued to strengthen our vendor protocols,” the spokesperson added.
