Apple is being sued after their AirPods caused a 12-year-old boy to lose his hearing.
A couple alleges that their son is suffering from “permanent hearing loss” after his AirPods set off an alert so loud that it tore one of his eardrums.
According to the lawsuit, the boy, identified as B.G, was using his AirPods Pro on a “low volume” to watch Netflix. Everything was fine until an Amber Alert “went off suddenly. And without warning, at a volume that tore apart B.G.’s eardrum, damaged his cochlea. And caused significant injuries to B.G.’s hearing.”
The suit claims, “The AirPods do not automatically reduce, control, limit, or increment notification or alert volumes to a safe level that causes them to emit.” It also states that there’s no way to adjust the alert volume on an iPhone.
B.G’s parent’s lawsuit says that Apple knew about the defect that caused the loud alerts but chose not to fix it. They also included some complaints from online customers who experienced the same issue.
Apple has yet to comment on the incident or the defect of their products.
