Apple introduced the highly anticipated iPhone 16 during its “Glowtime” event in Cupertino on Monday, and as expected, the new features are breathtaking.
CEO Tim Cook emphasized that the device is “designed around Apple Intelligence from the ground up,” highlighting the incorporation of new generative AI features first announced at the June WWDC event. The iPhone 16 also boasts a sleek design crafted from “aerospace-grade” aluminum for enhanced durability that can sustain those pesky falls.
As we prepare our wallets for this new iPhone 16, which will be available for pre-sale Friday, September 13, starting at $799, and its new Apple Intelligence technology, here are just a few of the most highly anticipated new features.
Stronger Display
The iPhone 16 is equipped with a display that features a 50% stronger ceramic shield, offering increased protection against scratches and drops. The device is available in two sizes: 6.1 inches and 6.8 inches.
Dedicated Camera Button
A newly added camera button on the side of the iPhone allows users to quickly take photos with a simple press. Holding the button enables video recording. This button integrates with Apple’s Taptic Engine, which recognizes swipes and varying pressure levels for different functionalities.
A18 Chip with Enhanced AI Capabilities
The iPhone 16 is powered by Apple’s latest A18 chip, built on a 3 nm architecture. The chip features a 6-core CPU (with four efficiency cores) and a neural network optimized for the company’s new generative AI models. Apple claims the A18 is up to 30% faster than the previous iPhone 15 chip, with improved power efficiency. The new GPU offers 35% better energy efficiency while delivering more power.
Improved Battery Life
While Apple has not yet revealed the exact battery specifications, the A18 chip’s efficiency, combined with larger batteries, promises longer battery life for the iPhone 16.
Apple Intelligence Integration
Apple Intelligence, the centerpiece of the new iPhone 16, leverages both on-device AI and cloud-based computation via the Private Cloud Compute system. This combination allows the iPhone 16 to run Apple’s new AI models offline and online, joining the iPhone 15 Pro in offering these advanced capabilities.
Upgraded Camera System
The iPhone 16’s main camera remains at 48 megapixels, but the dual-lens system has transitioned from a diagonal to a vertical layout. The camera supports 2x telephoto zoom with “optical quality,” drawing on large image files for enhanced detail.
Ultra-Wide Camera
This lens has been updated with autofocus and is capable of capturing up to 2.6x more light, improving performance in low-light conditions. It also supports macro photography.
Spatial Photos and Videos
Thanks to the new vertical design, the iPhone 16 can now capture Spatial Photos and Videos, which are compatible with Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
