Comedian Aries Spears is no stranger to controversy, but his latest remarks have sparked a wave of backlash. In a recent social media video, Spears shared some unfiltered—and highly critical—opinions on LSU women’s basketball star Angel Reese, dismissing her skills in comparison to Iowa’s Caitlyn Clark.
In the video, Spears starts off by expressing support for the Black community, saying, “I’m all about my fellow Black brothers and sisters. Support Black businesses, support Black causes, support our Black women, support each other, power to the people.” However, he quickly shifts gears, addressing those who have turned the Angel Reese vs. Caitlyn Clark debate into a racial issue.
“To all the Black people out here trying to make it a racial issue, y’all are delusional,” Spears states, before unleashing a harsh critique of Reese’s basketball abilities. “Angel Reese is garbage, pure garbage. When you look at her versus Kaitlyn [Clark] in terms of skillset, she’s garbage.”
The comedian went on to describe Reese’s style of play with unfiltered criticism, saying, “She just throws the ball up and plays like she’s part of the Special Olympics. She plays like a toddler. There’s no finesse, no smoothness, no beauty, no poetry, no skillset to her game at all. She’s garbage, stop being delusional.”
Spears’ comments immediately set off a firestorm on social media, with many calling his words offensive and disrespectful, not only to Angel Reese but also to athletes with disabilities. Fans and followers expressed their disappointment, with some accusing Spears of tearing down a young Black woman’s accomplishments. Angel Reese, who has become a prominent figure in college basketball and a role model for young athletes, has been celebrated for her skills, passion, and competitive spirit—qualities many fans feel Spears’ comments unjustly disregarded.
