According to investigators, an Arizona mother shot her two young children after telling them she wanted them to go to heaven.
Fox 10 Phoenix reported on Monday that Esther Callejas, 24, fatally shot her 2-year-old daughter at close range and then fired “at least” three rounds at her 6-year-old son as he ran away from her in their Phoenix home.
According to AZFamily.com, the mother struggled to reload her .38 after all the bullets were released. She then tried to kill herself by taking anti-depressants after informing her husband and sister-in-law of what she did.
As of Thursday, the son was still struggling for his life and in critical condition.
Police were called to the home at 11:45 a.m. when they arrived; the first responders gave CPR on the children until they could be transferred to the hospital.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Ann Justus said that responders were “shaken up” by the tragic scene.
“You can imagine something nobody should have to see our officers see it again and again,” she said.
According to the Arizona Republic, Callejas is being charged with murder and attempted murder. Callejas allegedly purchased the murder weapon a few years ago but kept it hidden from her husband, Emmanuel Isidro. According to the newspaper, she was on prescribed medication for depression.
The firearm was hidden in the kids’ room days before the shooting, according to the Republic. Before turning the rifle on her children, she fired a practice shot, accidentally striking herself in the left hand. According to the publication, Esperanza Isidro, 2, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Fox 10 reported that she acknowledged the shooting and said “she wanted them to go to heaven” in an interview with detectives after being detained.
