Authorities have arrested Caleb McCray in connection with the hazing-related death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson. McCray, a Southern graduate and Omega Psi Phi member, is facing charges of manslaughter and criminal hazing, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department and the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.
According to East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore, 15 to 20 people were present at the warehouse where Wilson collapsed, including fraternity members and pledges of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Law enforcement officials have scheduled a press conference for Friday to release further details about the case.
Wilson, a 20-year-old engineering student and member of Southern University’s Human Jukebox band, died last week in what the university has now classified as an alleged hazing incident. His family, friends, and community members gathered for a candlelight vigil at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Kenner, remembering him as a bright, loving presence.
“Caleb was just that loving person, just funny, just a thrill to be around,” said Charlotte Dixon, a loved one who attended the vigil. “There was nothing that I can say that you can dislike about Caleb.”
As the investigation continues, East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore has indicated that additional charges could follow, including felony hazing leading to death, negligent homicide, and manslaughter.
McCray’s attorney, Phillip Robinson, issued a statement urging the public not to rush to judgment, emphasizing that an accusation is not proof of guilt. “We are committed to ensuring that all facts are properly examined and that due process is followed,” Robinson said. “Many details being reported in the media may be incomplete, false, or lack proper context.” Robinson expressed deep condolences to Wilson’s family while maintaining his client’s innocence, stating that he has not been presented with any evidence supporting the charges. He also highlighted the broader impact of the case on Southern University, the Human Jukebox marching band, and the families involved. McCray and his family will not be making public statements during this time, with Robinson asking for privacy as legal proceedings move forward.
In a statement, Southern University said it has launched an internal investigation and is fully cooperating with law enforcement. The university reiterated its strict anti-hazing policies, noting that all organizations on campus must undergo rigorous anti-hazing training and adhere to strict membership intake standards.
