Former NFL running back Clinton Portis could be sent to jail for failure to pay child support after it was reported that he made $43 million during his career.
According to the Alachua Chronicle, a court order was issued for Portis’ arrest after failing to make a single payment on a monthly obligation of $1,937 for a child born in March 2015.
It was stated that the court found that Portis owes $147,962.49 plus interest. According to the Chronicle, the court also ruled that Portis has “the means and ability to pay, has guaranteed income, and has substantial retirement assets.”
In 2015, Portis sought bankruptcy protection, and child-support debts on the other hand are generally non-dischargeable. There was reportedly no sign that Portis’ debt was reduced in any manner as a result of his bankruptcy petition.
The nine-year NFL veteran is currently dealing with more pressing legal matters. On Monday, August 23, his criminal fraud case is set to begin in a federal court in Kentucky. According to reports, Portis is accused of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud.
