On Friday, after a three-day trial, a Stockholm court allowed A$AP Rocky walk free as he awaits the ruling in his assault case.
Nearly one month after his July 3 arrest, Rocky and his two co-defendants were released and free to leave Sweden, ahead of the August 14th verdict. As news surfaced of his release, the rapper, whose real name is Rakin Mayers, took to Instagram to thank fans for their support.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of my fans, friends and anyone across the globe who supported me during these last few weeks,” Rocky wrote. “This has been a very difficult and humbling experience.”
Rocky’s legal troubles erupted back in June after a street brawl in Stockholm, resulted in his July 3rd arrest. Although he pleaded not guilty, arguing that he and his co-defendants were simply defending themselves, prosecutors pursued charges- even seeking jail time of up to 10 months in prison.
“In a putative self-defense situation, the violence must still be proportionate. Here we have three people delivering kicks and punches to a person lying down,” the prosecutor said in court. “The three should be convicted of assault according to my description of events.”
However, the court later allowed the three to be released, ahead of its decision.
