Ashanti Is Ready to “Slow Down” & Start a Family Soon With Mr. Right

After 20 years of growing her illustrious career, singer Ashanti says she is ready to start a family of her own.

The “Happy” singer spoke with PEOPLE recently, where she dished on her many future goals, one of which being motherhood. She admitted that she’s looking forward to slowing down soon in hopes of fulfilling this dream but only with a person who can love her properly.

“I have to make sure it’s with the right person,” Ashanti shared.

Ashanti has kept her dating life out of the public eye for the most part after parting ways with rapper Nelly, who she dated on and off for about ten years. A few months ago, her former label head Irv Gotti revealed that the two were dating while she was signed to Murder Inc. Gotti was married at the time and admitted he was hurt to learn that Ashanti was dating Nelly. While the now 42-year-old did not completely deny there was a “situation,” she told Angie Martinez during a recent sit-down that Gotti “blew it out of proportion.”

She has also been linked to rapper Flo Rida but shut those rumors down last year, making it clear that the two were just friends. Nevertheless, she is not ruling out finding her Prince Charming and settling down with a mini-me. Regarding motherhood, Ashanti hopes to follow in the footsteps of her mother, Tina Douglas, who she says is “a different breed.” Douglas has spent years managing Ashanti and her younger daughter, Shia, a domestic violence advocate, and lifestyle brand owner.

“If I have an ounce of my mom’s skills, I’m superior, honestly, because my mom is the sh**,” the Grammy award winner told PEOPLE.
