In a conversation with Angie Martinez on the “IRL” podcast, the 44-year-old singer reflected on her reaction to his death and their complicated history.
“It was a lot to process,” she admitted. “I was really sad and I’m still sad that it ended like this. There was a time where things were just amazing, and I know that I always wanted peace for both of us and to be cordial. I wished peace for him and I prayed for him to be at peace. You don’t really see this coming. It came out of nowhere.”
Ashanti also shared her hopes for reconciliation because of their shared legacy.
“I really wanted it to happen,” she said. “We made history together — that’s infinite,” the “Foolish” star shared.
“I’m sad that the last few years we weren’t seeing eye to eye,” she continued. “What I do know is that I tried. I do know that I extended the olive branch and again, I just wanted things to be cool. I didn’t want no smoke.”
Following his passing, Ashanti posted a heartfelt tribute: “I can’t believe things ended like this….and it makes me so sad,” she wrote. “Through our ups and downs I will forever be grateful for everything that you’ve done for me. We made history and that will remain infinite.”
