Karl Smesko is well-known for his accomplishments at Florida Gulf Coast University, transforming the women’s program into a consistent mid-major competitor over the past 22 years. This morning, it was announced that Smesko will be taking his talents to Atlanta to coach the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream. Associate head coach Chelsea Lyles will take over the FGCU team immediately.
With an overall career record of 611-112, Smesko has led the Lady Eagles to the NCAA tournament numerous times, building a reputation for excellence. The Lady Eagles have been one of the top three-point shooting teams over the last decade, hitting 300 or more shots from beyond the arc in 15 consecutive seasons. Smesko is the third-winningest active Division I head coach, trailing only UCONN’s Geno Auriemma and LSU’s Kim Mulkey—an impressive distinction. At 54, Smesko reflected on his new opportunity in an interview with the Naples News, following conversations with the Atlanta Dream’s GM and owner.
“I follow the WNBA pretty closely, so I was aware of all the openings,” Smesko said. “I didn’t really think anything would come of it in terms of me being involved, but when I got the call, I was definitely eager to listen. And then, when it was Atlanta and some of their talent on that team, I became even more excited about it.”
He appears to be a great fit for a team seeking a leader who thrives in situations without high expectations. Atlanta Dream GM Dan Padover was particularly impressed with the pace and style of play of the Lady Eagles, as he shared with the Associated Press.
“Karl is a proven leader with a history of developing his players and creating a winning culture,” Padover said. “His fast-paced, innovative style of play will be attractive to our players and fans alike. We are excited to have Karl bring his incredible basketball IQ to the Dream.”
The Dream finished last season with a record of 15-25. The team parted ways with former coach Tanisha Wright after three seasons, during which she compiled a 48-68 record.
