Atlanta police fatally shot an “unruly man” after he shot a security guard inside a Brazilian steakhouse.
On Wednesday, authorities were called to Fogo de Chao in Buckhead to handle a disruptive patron. Upon arrival, officers encountered 22-year-old Nygil Cullins near the bar area. Police tried to escort him out of the restaurant when things took a turn.
According to Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr., one of the officers used their stun gun, which “had a negative effect on the subject.”
The altercation then moved towards the front doors. Cullins managed to get on his feet and attempted to run out of the restaurant. However, a security guard was able to tackle Cullins but was ultimately wounded when the man pulled out a gun and fired shots at him.
Officers successfully retrieved the weapon from Cullins. The security guard was taken to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition.
Cullins mother says her son was a former employee of Fogo de Chao. She also says Cullins suffers from mental health issues and wasn’t in his right state of mind during the shooting. In fact, she told reporters she contacted 911 to get him to a hospital hours before the incident. Unfortunately, Nygil Cullins left home before paramedics arrived.
According to the police, no officers or other bystanders were injured during the incident.
“There were a lot of individuals inside the restaurant, but our officers did a great job to isolate the subject to the front of the business, where no patrons were in harm’s way,” Hampton said.
