Tyrone Blackburn, the attorney who filed one of the high-profile sexual abuse lawsuits against music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, is now under the spotlight for potential disciplinary action, Billboard reports. This development comes after a federal judge critiqued Blackburn’s approach to filing lawsuits, suggesting they aim to attract media buzz and “embarrass defendants” rather than seek justice.
Judge Denise Cote, overseeing a separate legal malpractice lawsuit filed by Blackburn, pointed out his questionable legal practices across five different cases. According to Judge Cote, Blackburn’s pattern of filing seems designed to generate media coverage and embarrass the defendants with sensational claims, pressuring them towards quick settlements. Despite not levying a sanction, Judge Cote referred Blackburn to the Southern District of New York grievance committee, recommending further review.
This news emerges amid Blackburn’s ongoing role as the leading attorney for Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones in a comprehensive abuse case against Combs filed this February. Combs, facing several such accusations and a federal criminal probe recently, has vehemently denied all charges. Blackburn, undeterred by the judge’s comments, insists this will not affect his capacity to continue representing Jones, even planning to appeal Judge Cote’s decision.
In a lawsuit filled with allegations of sexual assault and harassment, Jones’ complaint against Combs extends to accusing him and others of violating federal RICO statutes, traditionally associated with prosecuting organized crime. Blackburn’s aggressive legal stance has already drawn criticism, with Combs’ defense and representatives for Universal Music Group challenging the validity of his claims and threatening legal repercussions for what they see as baseless allegations.
Judge Cote’s decision underscores concerns over Blackburn’s legal conduct, including filing cases in inappropriate courts and making unfounded public accusations against defendants and their counsel. The legal community is now watching closely as the grievance committee deliberates on Blackburn’s future in the profession, a process whose outcome remains uncertain.
In the meantime, the legal battle against Combs continues, with all parties bracing for a contentious confrontation in court.
