Attorneys for Shawn Kemp have issued a statement regarding the ex-NBA player’s arrest, saying that his actions were “reasonably and legally justified.”
It was previously reported that Kemp was arrested for opening fire in a Tacoma, WA, shopping mall parking lot after thieves allegedly opened fire on him first.
After Kemp was released from jail, attorney W. Scott Boatman detailed the incident on Thursday, saying his client’s property, including an iPhone, was stolen from his car.
According to Kemp’s attorney, he simply retaliated in self-defense and stayed at the scene to talk with police “in an attempt to assist in the matter.”
TMZ reported that no one was injured in the shooting.
On Wednesday, Kemp was arrested and detained for less than 24/7 hours before being released.
Currently, Boatman is trying to dispute that there was a “drive-by shooting,”… but according to Washington state legislature, a drive-by shooting is described as when someone “recklessly discharges a firearm as defined in RCW 9.41.010 in a manner which creates a substantial risk of death or serious physical injury to another person and the discharge is either from a motor vehicle or from the immediate area of a motor vehicle that was used to transport the shooter or the firearm, or both, to the scene of the discharge.”
Tacoma PD is still investigating the incident, and it is possible that Kemp could still face charges.
