A group of robbers reportedly stole over 200 sneakers from a footwear shop in central Peru, but unknowingly took only right-footed sneakers.
According to Diario Correo, the robbery occurred in the early hours of Sunday, April 30th. Security cameras purportedly captured footage of three individuals breaking into the shoe store in Huancay at approximately 3:30 a.m. The group allegedly made off with three sizeable boxes that contained roughly 220 sneakers from a popular, name-brand label.
The outlet reports that the robbers utilized a tricycle to transport the boxes and their padlock cutters. In addition, the thieves also states that it took the group of thieves an hour and several attempts to gain entry into the store. Despite leaving the left-footed sneakers behind, the stolen merchandise from the store, which is estimated to be worth approximately $13,000.
According to reports, law enforcement officials are currently investigating the robbery and are making efforts to locate both the perpetrators and the missing sneakers.
“We have gathered evidence at the scene,” local Police Chief Eduan Díaz said. “With the footage and the fingerprints, we will be able to locate those individuals.”
As of now, local authorities suspect that the stolen sneakers are being kept hidden because they cannot be sold in incomplete pairs.
This is not the initial instance of a failed sneaker heist in Peru. In mid-April, a comparable incident took place at a shoe store located in Ica. However, the National Police of Peru intervened and foiled the attempted robbery. Authorities was able to confiscate six sacks of sneakers that were worth up to $9,447.
