Authorities Say Ex-LSU Star Kyren Lacy Died from "Self-Inflicted" Gunshot Wound

More details have emerged about the death of former Louisiana State University standout Kyren Lacy.

The 24-year-old died from an apparent “self-inflicted gunshot wound” following a police chase in Texas, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday. Authorities responded to a weapons disturbance Saturday night involving Lacy and a family member. According to a release, Lacy fired a gun into the ground and left before police arrived.

Deputies later located Lacy’s vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. “Lacy then fled and a vehicle pursuit took place spanning several miles…The suspect vehicle crashed.” When officers tried to arrest him, they “discovered he had suffered what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

“Preliminary information indicates Lacy shot himself during the pursuit and prior to the vehicle crashing,” the release said. An autopsy will be conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

In January, Lacy was charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless driving after allegedly causing a December crash that killed 78-year-old Herman Hall. Police said Lacy was driving a 2023 Dodge Charger “recklessly,” passing vehicles at a “high rate of speed” and entered a no-passing zone, which led to a head-on collision.

Lacy posted about entering the 2025 NFL Draft just two days after the fatal crash. He did not play in LSU’s bowl win on December 31st.

“We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU Football student-athlete Kyren Lacy,” LSU said.
