A 60-year-old skier is dead and five others have been rescued after an avalanche on Crystal Mountain occurred in Washington on Saturday.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department received a call about the incident, which occurred in the Silver Basin backcountry area of the mountain, around 11 a.m.
The skier who died during the avalanche was a 60-year-old man, according to KING 5 News. It’s unknown if the other skiers were injured.
A witness said they saw a group of six skiers had become trapped in the avalanche. Luckily, the victims were equipped with an avalanche beacon, allowing rescuers to “quickly” locate them, PEOPLE reported.
“All of the skiers were pulled from the snow, but one was not breathing,” the sheriff’s department said on Facebook. “Rescuers attempted CPR, but the skier died at the scene.”
