An 18-month-old child was rescued from a house fire in Detroit’s east side after her adoptive mother told firefighters no one was in the home. According to the firemen at the scene, the child’s mother was more concerned about whether her 20 dogs were safe.
Firefighter LaVaughn Williams said he was surprised to find the baby girl in her crib, according to Click On Detroit. The baby’s room was filled with thick black smoke when he noticed movement in the crib. When Williams located her, she was having trouble breathing, and he rushed her out.
“The scariest thing about the whole situation is how do you not tell us there’s a child in there?” asked Williams.
After the baby was rescued, the mother asked for the baby back, but firefighters refused to give her back. Child Protective Services and Detroit police are now looking into the situation.
“I would not give that baby to any civilian until we got her to the hospital,” Detroit Fire Department Battalion Chief Myke Nevin said.
The fire has been ruled suspicious. Child Protective Services, arson investigators, and Detroit police are all investigating the house fire. Detroit police say there are a lot of unanswered questions.
