Baka Not Nice says he was prepared to respond to Kendrick Lamar’s diss on “Not Like Us,” but decided not to after hearing directly from Drake.
During a recent appearance on Hot Freestyle, the OVO rapper reflected on his reaction to being named on Kendrick’s viral diss track.
On the track, Kendrick rapped: “And Baka got a weird case, why is he around? / Certified Lover Boy? Certified pedophiles.”
The line referred to a 2014 legal case involving Baka, who was charged with forcing a woman into prostitution. The case was dismissed after the woman declined to testify, but the reference brought renewed attention to the situation.
Baka said he felt strongly about defending himself but decided to pause before reacting.
“Where I come from, that shit doesn’t happen. You can’t just call out a man and not have paperwork to back up your talks,” he said just after the 10-minute mark. “That’s just ludicrous, and then to see a whole nation behind it and celebrating it like it’s a true story is unbelievable cause everybody has to understand: I have a kid, Drake has a kid, you know what I mean? Making accusations like that are ridiculous and out of this world.”
According to Baka, he was seriously considering putting out a response track until he got a message from Drake that made him reconsider.
“I was building up a lot of anger and stuff like that, but then I got a call, but I don’t know why I got this call. It’s like God said something to him […] he messaged me, and he’s like, ‘Yo, I know what you’re feeling, I know you as an individual. I know how you get down, but I’m just letting you know, don’t listen to the noise cause it’s noise.’”
Baka said Drake told him that much of the backlash was coming from social media bots, and that having his name in the conversation wasn’t necessarily a negative thing.
“Drake helped me realize the dust would settle and people would do their own research,” Baka added, suggesting that the truth would come out in time.
