Demand for Balenciaga clothing has reportedly plunged a pair of sweatpants caused viral outrage on social media.
The controversial sweatpants retailing for $1,190 were accused of being a prime example of cultural appropriation and called “racist.”
According to the NY Post, demand for the Spanish fashion label declined by more than 27 percent since the controversy erupted on social media.
“If a brand makes headlines for all the wrong reasons, more often than not you’ll see a backlash online, which can instantly filter down to shoppers buying decisions,” LoveTheSales co-founder Stuart McClure said.
Even with celebrities like Kim, Kanye, and Rihanna wearing the designer to Monday Night’s Met Gala, McClure warns that the fashion house needs to be mindful of their customers.
“Brands need to be sensitive to the entire customer base, especially in this social media arena that most fashion giants operate in today,” he added.
