Nyemiah Supreme is a rising hip hop star from Jamaica Queens who won the hearts of many, including the attention of the man himself, Timbaland. Baller Alert got the chance to sit down with the rapper and star of Oxygen’s Sisterhood of Hip Hop for a candid interview where she dishes on everything from her the double standards of women in hip hop, reality television, “beef” with Diamond and her date with Mack Wilds. Was it all for show or are we seeing the real deal? Check out our exclusive interview below.
BA – What do you believe separates you from other female emcees today?
NS – “I would say my diversity in music. I always like to give a lot of different talking points. Whether it’s relationships, being in love, being heart broken, poppin’ shit, being fly with my girls, I like to touch a lot of bases. I also feel like I’m a little more accepting over other female rappers than the average female rapper is. I’m open to working with… I’m open to going to see someone else’s craft instead of it just being about Nyemiah all the time.”
BA – Was there ever a time in your career where you wanted to quit and if so, what stopped you?
NS – “Yeah! There’s so many closed doors. There are so many things that are required of females that aren’t required of males. It can take a toll on you mentally, emotionally. Men can get away with things that women can’t. Like [for example] dating, they can switch it up, they can be with one person one day, someone else the next day, they can slander you in their music after they date you and then go back and date you. And with females, once you have too many people on your list, even of people you’ve flirted with, or even stood next to, it becomes a “bad look” and they say you’re hopping from one to the next. Sometimes you want to be free and just be like ‘fuck all this shit’ but I’ve seen where not quitting has gotten me and I never want to be in that position of looking back and being like ‘man, I could’ve done this right now’ or ‘I could’ve been here right now.’ It’s not an option for me to look back on.”
BA – How did you connect with Timbaland and what it is like working with him?
NS – “That was a supreme moment for me. He heard some of my stuff and about two years ago I had the opportunity to come meet with him and work with him. He was like ‘Bring her in, I wanna see how she sounds on one of my tracks.’ Me hearing that, I’m in the bed like, ‘What the fuck? TIMBALAND wants to hear how I sound on one of his beats?’ All my favorite songs are produced by Timbaland so that was pretty surreal to me. When people ask me to explain the feeling, I have no words to explain it. It’s another one of those things that make me grateful that I did not quit and fall to the pressure.”
BA – You called “Sisterhood of Hip Hop” “Sisterhood of Shade” in a video on your Instagram. Who do you think is the shadiest cast member, and why?
NS – “I don’t think anybody is shady, I just think that when women have conversations with each other things just come out a little weird. Everybody takes things differently. So, I don’t know. I think people think I’m the shadiest cast member. I don’t know how I feel about that [laughs]”
BA – Did you honestly not know who Diamond was when you met her?
NS – “The question that was asked is, I didn’t know you were in Crime Mob. I didn’t say ‘I don’t know who you are’ or ‘I never heard of you’ all I said was I didn’t know you were in the group. That’s all I said and everybody kind of took their own angle of it saying that I said I didn’t know her, I never listened to her or I don’t respect her. I never said any of that. I just said I didn’t know she was in the group.”
BA – Were you throwing shade when you asked her what she thought she brought to the industry?
NS – “It was a question. Like if you say your birthday is coming up and I ask what day is your birthday. I was just looking for the proof. Tell me what you did. If you ask me how I feel I’ve changed the game, I’d give you my response but as you can see, I never got a response. If you’re honored by Billboard, I would expect you to know what they’re honoring you for or for you to know what you feel like you’re being honored for. I feel like this, I would ask Nicki Minaj or Lauryn Hill the same question — How do you feel you changed the game? Not saying that I don’t think you did.”
BA – Did what Diamond say on the last episode about your dancers change anything about your performances? Do you feel like she has room to speak on what you need to change?
NS – “No. That was her opinion. I don’t take people’s opinion into consideration too much, especially if you don’t have anything to do with my production. I definitely thought that was left field like, Do you do any of this? When was the last time you had a show to tell me about mine?”
BA – Have you changed anything about your live performance since her criticism?
NS – “Never will I ever. No.”
BA – Did you feel threatened by having a rapper like Diamond move to New York, considering it was your territory first?
NS – “No. You have to be born in New York to make it in New York. You can’t just move there and make it but I honestly, I wish her the best of luck.”
BA – Let’s talk about Mack Wilds! On previous week’s episodes you guys went out on a date and it seemed kind of awkward, was it editing that made it seem that way or was it really that weird in person?
NS – “I think that scene really just showed how awkward I am — with guys and with friends. I think the whole show just shows me being very awkward when I have to deal with other people. I mean, I do have a shell I’m in when it comes to dealing with guys or when it comes to talking about being in a relationship. I kind of got a little antsy in that scene. I didn’t want to talk about what Mack wanted to talk about. I just wanted to talk about music and what you’re doing next. I’m real business like and about the money, I don’t wanna talk about what happened in old relationships and go into my deep feelings.
BA – Have you spoken with Mack since the episode has aired? What did he say?
NS – “Yeah we laughed about the episode. It was funny watching it back. It was like ‘Yo, this is so stupid.’ [laughs]”
BA – What are your thoughts on dating someone in the industry?
NS – “I usually don’t think it’s a good idea unless it’s someone you knew already or someone you were friends with for a long time. Otherwise I feel like your best interest is not at hand. Everyone is gonna have their own interests for their own careers. You’re not #1. I’d advise people to be in relationships with people where you’re #1 and not #2 to their career.”
BA – What are you working on now?
NS – “I have a new single out called ‘No Questions’ with K-Camp. It’s explaining who I am and how I really don’t f*** with nobody but myself, leave me alone, stay out my way [laughs]. It’s a fun song, it’s real swagged out. Everybody loves it so I feel like it’s gonna go really far. A lot of people relate to it. I think a lot of people relate to who I am as a person with that same ‘don’t fuck with me’ vibe.”
