A brand new episode of the Baller Alert Show podcast had dropped! Episode 148 features a special guest, the legendary producer Chucky Thompson and he’s giving us all the tea about working with Mary J. Blige, Notorious B.I.G. and much more.
As always, the show kicks off with Incase You Missed It where Su gives us updates on the latest news and happenings such as a 9-year-old girl who was irate because ‘Black Lives Matter’ posters were up at her school. Plus, Rapper Toosii says Popeyes started the pandemic with their chicken sandwich. Huh?
Chucky Thompson
Chucky dives in and gives insight on some of the classic records he helped make such as Biggie’s ‘Big Poppa’ and Mary J Blige’s ‘My Life,’ album and Nas’ ‘One Mic.’ He details becoming a hitman at Badboy Records in the ’90s. One of the first records he ever submitted was ‘Be With You’ which later made its way to May’s ‘My Life’ album. Following that, he got a management deal through the record label.
“And that’s pretty much how the story started.”
“What was the biggest first check you got, how much was it, and what did you get with it?” Rari asked Chucky.
“My first million dollars came from Bad Boy… Puff felt that strongly about the union, that, at that time for me to be a new producer coming in the game. That was my contract. And then from there, it was Sony publishing.”
On Almost Not Working On Biggie’s ‘Life After Death’ Album
“At that particular time, for me, I was working on my artist. I was just trying to devote my time [to that.]” He speaks on the time he ran into Biggie in the studio, to which he said Biggie asked why ‘you ain’t doing nothing on my album? You got one of the biggest records on my last album so it’s gonna look real funny if you’re not on this one.”

On Working With Mary J Blige and Her ‘My Life’ Documentary
“I think the fans are going to love it. She’s a real one. This story tells what’s behind the curtain. I give a lot of credit to her to be able to expose herself like that, the ugly truths. The documentary packages up.”
On Successes Taking a Toll on Him Personally
“I always try to let the work speaks for itself. And that keeps me in a real space.”
Chucky also chatted about much more in this episode, even revealing he thinks Mary J could go up against Anita Baker in a VERZUZ Battle and his upcoming documentary, Chucky Thompson Presents D.C. Go-go.
Baller Mail
Dear Rari, my wife is terrible with money. I have to hide money from her all the time. I love her with all my heart but from managing money to managing credit, she’s hella irresponsible. How do I speak to her in a way that doesn’t hurt her feelings?
Chucky, Rari and Su share their advice. Hear what they had to say and the rest of the episode below.
