On May 19, 1998, 20 years ago today, Brandy and Monica released their duet, “The Boy Is Mine.” The song was also released as the lead single from the ladies’ second albums, Brandy “Never Say Never” and Monica “The Boy Is Mine.”
The song was inspired by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney’s 1982 duet “The Girl Is Mine.” The 1998 version of the song revolved around two women fighting over a man.
“The Boy Is Mine” was the first number one pop hit for Brandy and Monica. It became the best-selling song of the year in the US, selling 2.6 million copies, and spent 13 weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 during the summer of 1998. It became the second song in the history of the chart to ascend directly to number-one from a previous position beneath the Top 20.
