On May 20, 1997, 21 years ago today, Missy Elliott released “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).” The song was written and composed by Don Bryant, Bernard “Bernie” Miller, Missy Elliott, and producer Timbaland for her debut album “Supa Dupa Fly.” It contains a sample of Ann Peebles’ 1973 single “I Can’t Stand the Rain”, in which the lyrics serve as the chorus.

The song entered the Hot R&B Airplay chart in mid-June and peaked at number 6 the week of August 9, 1997. It peaked at number 51 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart the following week.

Not only is the song a classic but the video was simply amazing, directed by Hype Williams. The video featured artists like #Total, #LilKim, #Timbaland, #Yoyo, #SWV, #702, #DaBrat, and more. We can also thank the talented #JuneAmbrose for using her creativity to style Missy in a custom inflatable suit for the video. The look became a classic along with the song.
