The year 2023 has been a wild ride, and sadly, the entertainment industry has lost several great names along the way.

The passing of celebrities inevitably leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape, as their contributions have resonated with audiences across the globe. Whether actors, musicians, or other acts, their performances, and artistry continue to inspire and shape the industry. The news of their deaths often sparks reflections on their legacies, the impact of their work, and the void left behind in the creative realm. Despite the sorrow that accompanies the loss of these entertainers, their enduring influence serves as a testament to the enduring power of art to connect, move, and transcend time. Here’s a look back at the brilliant people we’ve lost this year.

Television personality Bobby Rivers, who hosted shows such as “Watch Bobby Rivers” on VH1 and “Top 5” on the Food Network, passed away on December 26th at the age of 70 after battling lung cancer and a series of strokes.

Parliament-Funkadelic member Amp Fiddler passed away on December 18th at age 65 after a long battle with cancer.

Actor André Braugher, most widely known for his roles on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Homicide: Life on the Street,” and “Glory,” died on December 11th months after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Adored actor Richard Roundtree died on October 24th peacefully in his home from pancreatic cancer. Roundtree was most known for his iconic role as John Shaft in the 1970s movie, “Shaft.” He was 81.

Singer and The Isley Brothers founder Rudolph Isley died of a heart attack at age 84 on October 11th. He lent his expertise to several classics such as “Between the Sheets,” “For the Love of You, Pts. 1 &2” and several others.

Rapper Gangsta Boo died on January 1st from an accidental drug overdose. The Memphis star was a member of Three 6 Mafia before leaving the group to embark on her solo career. Before her death, she was featured on GloRilla on Latto’s single, “FTCU.”

DJ Casper, also known as William Perry Jr., died on August 7th. He was the founder of the famous “Cha Cha Slide.” Sadly, he lost his battle with kidney and liver cancer when he was 58.

The legendary Tina Turner died on May 24th after years of health issues such as a stroke, cancer, and kidney disease. The rock and roll sensation is widely known for hits such as “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” “I Don’t Wanna Fight,” and “Private Dancer.” Additionally, she was one half of Ike & Tina Turner with her ex-husband. Together, they created timeless records such as “Proud Mary” and “Nutbush City Limits.” Turner was 83.

R&B singer Irish Grinstead died on September 16th after a long battle with a serious illness, though it has not been revealed. Grinstead, along with her group 702, released popular singles, “Get It Together,” “Steelo,” and “Where My Girls At.” She was just 43 years old.

Actor, singer, and activist Harry Belafonte died on August 25th at age 96. Throughout his career, he focused heavily on the civil rights movement in addition to his entertainment endeavors.

Singer Bobby Caldwell passed away from an illness on March 14th at age 71. He is most widely known for his single, “What You Won’t Do for Love.” Caldwell’s music has been sampled by Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, and Common, to name a few.
