Why Won’t My Lip Color Stay On?

We’ve all had that problem, having to reapply your lip color over and over and… well, you get it. No matter what color, brand, or finish it just won’t stay on. Well here are some tips and tricks to help you out just a tad bit.

1. Line ‘Em Up – Lip liner isn’t just for getting lip color as close to your lip’s edge as possible. A great trick for lasting lip color is to completely fill your lips with your lip liner before you apply your color. But because most lip liners aren’t very moisturizing, you want to make sure your lips are properly hydrated before you do this. That doesn’t mean get a finger full of vaseline or use half a tube of ChapStick. Your liner will slide right off if you do that, thus making this tip useless. So properly hydrate your lips, apply your liner all over your lips, then apply your lip color.

2. A Solid Foundation – Your foundation doesn’t have to only be used for your facial skin. Try using a duo fibre brush (the brush that’s black at the bottom and looks like it has white bristles sticking up at the top) and dabbing just a small bit of foundation onto your lips. This will give the lip color a better base to “hold on to” and fading won’t be as easy. This rule doesn’t apply to lip glosses.

3. What’s Inside Counts – The type of lip product you have determines the amount of reapplying you’ll be doing. For example, lip glosses are not intended for “one time applying” but most lipsticks can be. Matte lipsticks (no shine; has a “paper” finish) are the best kind of lip products if you do not want to keep reapplying. These type of lipsticks have very little to no shine which helps them stay on longer. Satin, lustre, and glaze lipsticks will require a little more work to keep them on. The more moisture/gloss in the product, the more you’ll have to continue to put on.

4. The Finishing Touches – So now that you’ve used all of the other rules, let’s seal the deal. Once you’ve applied your lip color, take a tissue or paper towel and press your lips onto it. This will help press the color onto your lips and take off any excess product. Once you’ve done that, you can use a small fluffy brush and apply a translucent finishing powder to set your lips. Now don’t confuse this with a setting powder, that’s something completely different. Use that and you’ll be walking around looking like you just ate a powdered donut. A translucent finishing powder (such as NYX Studio Finishing powder, MUFE Microfinish powder, or MAC Prep and Prime translucent powder) appears white in it’s container but applies see-through.

*Bonus* Always getting your lipstick on your teeth? Try sticking your pointer finger in your mouth, sealing your lips around it, then pulling it out slowly. This helps get the excess product off that’s closer to the inside of your mouth.
