Tuesday night, New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith joined the Coalition for the Homeless to distribute coats and winter gear for the 2014 New York Cares Coat Drive. After hearing about the urgent need for coats, Smith’s partners Under Armour graciously donated over 100 coats and winter gear items to the drive, while NY2O donated 360 bottles of water for the Coalition for the Homeless’ food bank.
Smith spent the night helping Coalition volunteers outfit individuals with coats and sweatshirts while taking the time to personally greet everyone on line waiting for their turn to sample the donated items. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to support New York Cares and the Coalition for the Homeless this holiday season and appreciate the generosity of both Under Armour and NY2O, who have come forward to help in this effort alongside me,” said Smith. The New York Cares Coat Drive is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. Since 1989, New York Cares has collected and distributed 1.6 million coats. New Yorkers can donate gently-used, freshly laundered coats at almost 300 public sites around the city, including every New York City Police Precinct, Penn Station, Grand Central Station, Atlantic-Barclays Terminal, Columbus Circle Subway, as well as hundreds of private sites hosted by corporations and civic groups.
