New Music Friday is here again, introducing a highly anticipated Blockbuster release.
July 12th marked the release of Eminem’s “The Death of Slim Shady,” which finds the Detroit superstar letting go of his longtime rap alter-ego. His twelfth studio album was led by the single “Houdini,” which was unveiled in May 2024. In true Em fashion, the track was highly controversial, as it referenced Megan Thee Stallion being shot in 2020. The next follow-up single, “Tobey,” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron, debuted in the days ahead of the album on July 8th.
Several of Em’s rap colleagues opted to drop a bit earlier in the week. On Wednesday, July 10th, XXL Freshman Bossman DLow debuted his latest single, “PJ,” with help from Lil Baby. YG, Lil Yachty, and Babyface Ray also dropped “Stupid” on Tuesday, July 9th. Hip-hop veterans Common and Pete Rock delivered a welcoming song on the same day titled “Fortunate.” This would turn out to be the lead song from their joint body of work, “The Auditorium Vol. 1,” released simultaneously as Eminem’s album. Tink also joined this lineup, sharing the fifth installment of her “Winter’s Diary” mixtape series, contributing to this promising batch of fresh tunes perfect for the weekend.
