“You can always tell how a man will treat his wife by the way he treats his mother” – Janette Rallison
In most cases, the saying is true-watch the way a man treats his mother and/or sister to understand his relationships with women. However, the saying isn’t always applicable to your situation. There are different types of people in this world, and not every quote pertains to every single person.
While dating a man who has a history of great relationships with women can be to your benefit, his relationship with his mother can turn out to be a nightmare for you. So, what do you do?
Personally, a man’s relationship with the women in his life is important, to an extent. I’ve learned to steer completely clear of mama’s boys, for the same reason that many would run towards them: their relationship with their mother.
In a relationship, it’s important to be on the same page with your significant other. I’ve found, with mama’s boys, their relationship with their mother always comes before anything else. While that is sweet and could be good for some, it doesn’t always work out for the best. After a while, you find yourself competing with his mother, in every aspect of your life. And it all starts with attention.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying a man should completely cut his mother off for his significant other. But, in no way shape or form, should your significant other be canceling dates with you, to help his mother grease her scalp.
If you recall, in the box office hit “Think Like a Man,” Terrance J’s character nearly lost his girlfriend because of his shenanigans with his mother. The fact that Candace Sparks had to put her foot down regarding Michael’s relationship with Ms. Loretta was ridiculous in itself. He was also forfeiting new traditions with Candace, in order to stay up under his mother. Keeping secrets from his girlfriend, which in turn put a strain on the relationship, in the name of his mama. And that’s just in the first move, the list goes on.
All I’m saying is, there needs to be a line.
Set some boundaries, separating the significant other from the mother, because your mother is not your SO.
