Ballerific Relationships: Interracial Couples By: @milagreee

“You and your nappy headed girl friend can just leave my house, I’m sick of you both!”

Those were the harshest, cruelest words that ever crossed my ears. Now if you look at my page, my hair is on and poppin so lets disregard that. Ha ha. But seriously, this was the mother of the man I lived with. He was a cross between German and Irish and I am proudly Dominican- American, to be politically correct. I’m not sure if she was making the racial remark because she was upset at something that he did, but the comment was made and there was no taking it back. At some point, she also asked my boyfriend why he “allowed me to leave my nappy hair in our drain.” -___- This is hard for me to express because it is extremely personal and totally tore at my heart and soul because I didn’t think she saw me as a color but a person, but I feel it is detrimental to prove my point.

Dating a man that isn’t the same race as you can be a problem for some people. Ignorant people. There are trials and tribulations that you might go through, although now a days, its become more prevalent and common for a man and woman of different races to be walking down the street together. In another instance, I was at his church which was predominately white although it was catholic, I am catholic and didn’t see a problem being in that church. The number of older women that turned around and started whispering was uncanny. Amongst the whispers, “colored” was uttered. It was uncomfortable, so I asked if we could leave. This was a few years ago granted, and I understand that older people don’t really change their mind sets so I believe the problem is with them and their ignorance.

As a couple, we faced a lot of challenges, including his friends asking why he was dating me in the first place? Cant find a white girl that will date you huh? You are attracted to who you are attracted to. Color, size, hair, face, we all have preferences and just because you were raised in a certain culture doesn’t mean you should limit yourself to only dating that type of person. I feel as though, years ago it would have been a lot harder to date a guy of a different culture. Our generation is more open to the diversity of people and their preferences, we are more open minded than those of an older generation. I feel as though the world has progressed enough not to stare at a black man and a white woman or vice versa walking down the street. It is something that we have accepted as normal. Reality is that we do not choose who we are attracted to and if we did America wouldn’t be the beautiful melting pot that it is. Babies of more than one culture are beautiful and couples that can collide different races together and make a strong, loving family are beautiful and admirable.
