Aldon Smith has just been released from the San Francisco 49ers. Following his arrest on Thursday night, the Linebacker’s contract was terminated sometime on Friday. Smith’s August 6th arrest was his third since entering the league in 2011.
It is speculated that Smith might have possibly still had his job had he taken responsibility when general manager, Trent Baalke, met with him after his release Friday (ESPN). Previously, The 49ers organization spoke about wanting to keep Smith a 49er, however that desire appeared to be short-lived.
Earlier this year, Aldon Smith restructured his contract. He walked away from a $9.75 million fully guaranteed check to basically “betting” on himself and earning his pay throughout the season with his roster bonuses beginning last April. The one-year deal was created with the premise of there being an extension in 2016. Smith can now bid a farewell to that premise and contract.
This is probably the best time for Aldon to check into some therapy and figure out why he keeps making poor decisions. At 25, with four years under his belt, Smith can be an asset to another team if he becomes serious about being on the straight and narrow. Hopefully Smith gets himself together. He has the opportunity so many kids dream about.
