In a perfect world, people of color would be presented the same opportunities as their white counterparts. Unfortunately, this world is far from perfect, however, there are people, more specifically women, who have dedicated their time, money and education to make a positive change. They’ve used their experiences and their encounters with injustices to fight and/or create more opportunities for their children and their children’s children, in an effort to make the world a better place. One of those special individuals is Dee Rees, Rising Hollywood Director & Screenwriter.

Best known for her captivating work in the movie, ’Mudbound’; Ms. Dee has led sets for ’Pariah,’ ’Bessie,’ ’When We Rise,’ and ’Empire’ to name a few.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Nashville native, explored many jobs and interests while growing up, such as sales and marketing, but found herself drawn towards entertainment and film while accompanying on set for a Dr. Scholl’s commercial.

Falling in love with the idea of creating and directing stimulating content, Ms. Dee found herself taking on the challenge of film school.

Luckily, this skeptical choice was in God’s plan, as her first professor and personal mentor was no other than, Spike Lee.

Under the guidance of Spike Lee, Dee Rees, got a chance to work alongside the legendary director, while starting to write impressive scripts herself.

This eventually led Ms. Dee Rees to a lot of nominations and much-deserved awards for her film work.

She has earned herself nearly two dozens of awards for her work as a screenwriter and director.

Her most famed film, ’Mudbound,’ reflects Ms. Dee’s stance on racial biases around the world and its effects on families. The hit film was soon purchased by Netflix for $12.5 million dollars.

She broke records while being the first black women to ever get nominated for the Oscars’ — best-adapted screenplay and writing, awards.

Aiming to break barriers and build bridges for other women, especially African-American women, Dee Rees, continues to find powerful ways to bring awareness vicariously through her films.

Dee Rees is currently working on a new exciting commercial for the multi-billion dollar company, Wal-Mart.
