In a shocking incident that unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore experienced a catastrophic failure after a collision with a large container ship. The impact to one of the bridge’s columns led to a portion of the bridge collapsing into the Patapsco River, resulting in vehicles and potentially people plunging into the waters below.
Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace provided an update on the situation, describing it as “an active search and rescue” operation. With the Coast Guard actively participating, the efforts to find and rescue individuals are extensive. “We may be looking for upwards of seven individuals, that’s the latest information we have,” Wallace said during a press briefing on Tuesday morning. The search efforts are comprehensive, spanning both the river and the deck of the container ship involved in the incident.
This tragedy has gripped the city, as emergency services work tirelessly to address the aftermath of the bridge collapse and ensure the safety of all affected.
