Just days after footage of a brutal beating by a Baltimore police officer went viral, the unidentified cop has resigned from his position.
On Sunday, Baltimore Police Department announced the news, following reports of the officer’s suspension amid the pending investigation.
“The officer involved in yesterday’s incident is no longer with the BPD,” the department wrote on Twitter. “Interim Commissioner Tuggle has accepted his resignation. The second officer remains on administrative duties. This remains an active criminal investigation.”
The incident occurred on Saturday outside Q’s Bar and Liquors on the 2600 block of E. Monument St. in East Baltimore after an officer approached an unarmed man for seemingly no reason.
In the video, the officer is seen throwing punches at the man, shoving him into a structure and beating him until he falls to the ground. A second officer briefly steps in to subdue the victim, as the first officer continued to strike him. However, the man did not appear to fight back.
After the violent incident, the man was taken into custody, and the video went viral.
