In an era where jokes run the risk of getting you slapped, Barack Obama had zero fears when he jokingly referred to Joe Biden as “Vice President” during a visit to the White House.
The 44th President returned to his old stomping ground on Tuesday for the first time in five years at an event commemorating the 12th anniversary of the signing of the Affordable Care Act. During his speech in the East Room, with Biden and VP Kamala Harris by his side, he referred to Biden as “Vice President,” followed by an embrace of his longtime friend and former running mate.
“That was a joke,” Obama noted. When Biden took over the mic, he gleamed at the sight of his dear friend returning to the presidential quarters.
“Welcome back to the White House, man. It feels like the good old days,” Biden said.
With Biden by his side, the country’s former leader passed the Affordable Care Act following a flurry of roadblocks on March 23rd, 2010. During his address at the White House this week, Obama reminded everyone of how slow progress can be in Washington to get measures passed.
In addition to celebrating the ACA’s passing, Obama was also present alongside Biden as he announced changes to the Act to expand health care access to more Americans. Families who spend more than 10% of their income on health insurance would be eligible for tax credits under the Treasury Department’s proposal. The change is set to take effect in January and allows 200,000 uninsured citizens to receive coverage, while millions of others will have lower premiums.
Since Biden became President, enrollment and coverage through the ACA have reached its highest level.
It’s an honor to welcome my friend President @BarackObama back to the White House. I look forward to discussing the big step we’re announcing today that would expand coverage under the Affordable Care Act for families and lower health care costs for hardworking Americans. pic.twitter.com/FkLnkB96Jt
