Barack Obama joined Michelle Obama on her IMO podcast for the first time and immediately addressed the rumors about their marriage.
Before Barack even entered the room, Michelle and her brother Craig Robinson teased the upcoming guest. Craig hyped it up, calling it the episode “everyone’s been waiting for with bated breath,” then introduced “my brother-in-law, your husband, the former president of the United States.”
As Barack walked in, Craig jokingly asked, “Wait, you guys like each other?” Michelle played along, responding, “That’s the rumor mill.”
Barack added to the joke as he sat down. “She took me back! It was touch and go for a while,” he said, drawing laughter from both Michelle and Craig. Michelle quickly cut in with, “Now, don’t you start,” and Craig followed with, “It’s so nice to have you both in the same room.”
Michelle replied, “I know, because when we aren’t, folks think we’re divorced.”
For months, rumors about the Obamas’ marriage have circulated online, with many pointing to their solo appearances and separate public projects as signs of a possible split.
Even a recent family photo taken during Sasha Obama’s 24th birthday celebration failed to convince some that the couple was still together.
Michelle had already addressed the speculation in a separate interview earlier this year.
While speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett, she said, “The beauty of my husband and our partnership is that neither one of us was really ever gonna quit at it, because that’s not who we are. And I know that about him. He knows that about me.”
Despite the rumors, the podcast appearance showed a relaxed, familiar energy between Barack and Michelle.
With just a few jokes and their usual back-and-forth, Barack and Michelle managed to shut down the rumors simply by showing up and being themselves.
