Barbie Honors Black American Journalist Ida B. Wells With ‘Inspiring Women’ Doll

Barbie honors the impact and legacy of Black journalist Ida B. Wells.

Wells was an American investigative journalist and activist, who became widely known for uncovering the tragic lynchings of Black Americans and racism during the 1890s. She also was a leader in the Women’s Suffrage movement, fighting for the women’s right to vote.

In addition, after relocating to Chicago in 1894, Wells established the first Black kindergarten, which Black women organized. She also helped elect the city’s first Black alderman. Wells was born into slavery in 1862, was also the owner of the newspaper The Memphis Free Speech and Headlight.

These are just some of the numerous reasons that Barbie has made her the latest addition to the brand’s “Inspiring Women” series. Wells’ doll is dressed in her signature black high neck dress.

Barbie says having Wells as their newest “Inspiring Women” doll will empower future generations. “When kids learn about heroes like Ida B. Wells, they don’t just imagine a better future — they know they have the power to make it come true,” wrote Barbie in an Instagram post.

According to CNN, the doll will be available at major department stores by January 17.
