Barbie Is Releasing A Day Of The Dead Doll In Honor of Mexican Holiday

Mattel is releasing the first-ever Day of the Dead collectible Barbie.

Dia de Los Muertos Barbie will be available via Amazon.com, Target, and Walmart for $75 on September 12, 2019, according to a spokesperson who spoke to USA Today.

The doll celebrates the holiday that runs from October 31 through November 2nd. She will wear an elaborate headpiece, full of monarch butterflies and bright marigold, velvet, floor-length ruffled black gown embellished with hearts, butterflies, and flower details.

On her face is a painted traditional skull mask, representing the deceased loved one or an expression of herself.

Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a 3,000-year-old ritual, started by the Aztecs which began in Mexico and spread into the states. It is marked with festivals, cemetery visitation, and vibrant skull face painting. Families celebrate deceased relatives, leaving their favorite food, possessions, and alcohol on homemade altars called, ofrendas.
