In some areas of the U.S. experiencing record heat, frozen treats are certainly a go-to way to stay cool. With summer months being the most profitable for the ice cream market, several Black-owned creameries are keeping customers happy with a litany of unique flavors and vibrant atmospheres.
Though they do not make up the majority, Black entrepreneurs have long sought to thrive in the industry. Augustus Jackson, known as The Father of Ice Cream, was the first person to implement salt into the ice cream-making process during the 1820s. This has since become an industry standard, as it slows the ice melt. Since then, African Americans have worked hard to make their marks in the industry.
February 2022 marked a monumental milestone for Black ice cream entrepreneurs by unveiling the first Black-owned Ben & Jerry’s store in Tampa, Florida. Elsewhere, another master in the field, Executive Chef Liz Rogers, also became the first African American woman to have a national ice cream chain, So Creamalicious, available in grocery stores nationwide.
If you’re looking for a fun outing this summer, stop at any of these Black-owned ice cream shops for unique flavors and good energy.
